What Is Vachetta Leather? How to Care for It
Vachetta is a natural, untreated leather used for the handles, trims and tabs of many designer bags. It has no protective top coat, so it takes in water, oils and marks easily, and over time it darkens into a warm, honey-coloured patina. With the right protection, it ages evenly and beautifully.

What is Vachetta leather?
Vachetta is cowhide leather left in its natural state. It is not sealed or coated, which is why it looks so pale and soft when a bag is new. You will find it on the handles, piping and trims of the most loved canvas bags, including Louis Vuitton.
That open surface is also what makes Vachetta so absorbent. Light, air and the natural oils from your hands slowly deepen its colour. This is called patina, and it is what gives a well-loved bag its character.

Is Vachetta real leather?
Yes. Vachetta is genuine leather, and its name comes from the Italian word for cowhide. It feels softer and more natural than coated leathers because nothing sits between you and the hide.
Why does Vachetta mark so easily?
- An open surface: with no top coat, water, oils and colour transfer sink straight in.
- Natural patina: sunlight and handling deepen its colour, and uneven exposure can leave uneven tones.
- A soft finish: the surface is supple, so everyday scratches show more readily.
The good news is that all three are easy to stay ahead of once your Vachetta is protected.
How to protect Vachetta from water marks and stains
The best time to protect Vachetta is before you first carry the bag. Water & Stain Guard helps create an invisible barrier against water marks, spills and colour transfer. We tested it on brand new Vachetta held under a running tap.

- Make sure the leather is clean and dry. Remove any luggage tags or cloches and protect them separately.
- Apply a little Water & Stain Guard to a clean cloth or the Application Mitt, rather than straight onto the leather.
- Wipe it evenly over every section, working around the bag in order and paying attention to seams and edges.
- Apply one or two light coats rather than one heavy coat, leaving at least six hours between coats.
- Let the bag dry naturally for up to 24 hours before you carry it.
Your Vachetta will still develop a patina once protected. Protection helps it deepen evenly, and we have found it slows the process down.

Can you cleanse Vachetta leather?
If your Vachetta is new or has no marks, there is no need to cleanse it - simply protect it. The less you apply to Vachetta, the more beautifully it ages.
For Vachetta that already has marks, we recommend Gentle Foam Cleanser, worked in straight, even strokes. Results vary depending on how long a mark has been there, so a gentle approach is best. Once dry, finish with Water & Stain Guard.
For Vachetta that feels dry and tired, a light, even layer of Nourishing Conditioner brings back its softness.

Everyday Vachetta care
- Handle your bag with clean, dry hands.
- Store it in its dust bag, away from direct sunlight, rather than sealed in its box.
- Keep a Cleansing Wipe in your bag to lift everyday marks the moment they happen.

Vachetta leather FAQs
Does Water & Stain Guard darken Vachetta?
Applied in light, even coats, it should not. Vachetta can look slightly darker while it is wet, then returns to its own shade once dry.
Will my Vachetta still patina if I protect it?
Yes. Vachetta always develops a patina. Protecting it helps the colour deepen evenly.
How often should I re-protect Vachetta?
If you carry the bag every day, cleanse any marks and re-protect about every eight weeks.
Can I use Leather Restore Pens on Vachetta?
Leather Restore Pens are made for smooth and grained leather and coated canvas, so they are not used on Vachetta. Water & Stain Guard is the product to reach for.
